FORGET EATING YOUR GREENS, PURPLE POWER IS IN!

FORGET EATING YOUR GREENS - this year is all about purple food. Why? Because research suggests that purple vegetables have much higher levels of antioxidants. Asda, which had a 10 per cent rise in purple veg sales last year, is introducing Britain’s first home-grown purple Chinese leaf, while Harvey Nichols is releasing a purple matcha tea.

SO WHAT ELSE DO THEY SAY WILL MAKE YOU HEALTHIER IN 2016?

Seaweed - Nutritionist Fiona Hunter says seaweed is packed with minerals, vitamins, iron, antioxidants, amino acids and protein, but “its biggest asset is that it is really good source of iodine, a nutrient which many people are not getting enough of.” (Thyroid needs iodine I understand!!!)
Pulses, peas and beans - The United Nations has declared that 2016 is the International Year of Pulses, with the aim of promoting pulses as a primary source of protein and other essential nutrients (plus they are cheap!).Other stuff she recommends: sprouted grains, raw vegan, tiger nuts and loads and loads of information and other people to follow up what they are recommending BUT THERE IS ONE THAT'S NOT FOR ME..........!!

Insects

Bugs can contain a higher percentage of protein than chicken, more calcium than milk and more iron than spinach as well as providing vital amino acids and other minerals. They can be fried, baked, made into burgers and dips or ground into flour!
No, no, no - I won't be doing that!

(Loads more info on the above link)

But it gets worse - an insect cookbook!

UN urges people to eat insects to fight world hunger. However it admits that "consumer disgust" remains a large barrier in many Western countries.

Yep! I agree with that! If that was all there was to eat Slimming World would be out of a job!

This is a better story I think!

WE ALL STRUGGLE to make the changes in our lives that will help us to move forward. That change is often only possible because we make our minds up to do something and there is someone there to see it through with us.
For former Big Issue vendor James Bowen that someone was a cat… a cat he named Bob: "The day I met Bob my life changed forever. I was no longer invisible. People not only stopped and bought a copy of The Big Issue from me but often stopped to talk to me," says James.
In 2007, James, a recovering heroin addict, found an injured cat curled up on a step. The cat was starving and injured, seemingly alone in a block of council flats in Tottenham.
James wrote a book about his life with Bob which is now being turned into a film. Read more at:

Morning Stories: Have Courage To Be Contrarian from Sky News

Do you usually just believe what you read and what people tell you?

A contrarian is someone who automatically tends to take the opposite point of view from the person to whom they're speaking, or to disagree with society at large.

(Ice cream cone - en.wikipedia.org)

Friend: I've got some ice cream, you want vanilla or chocolate?
Contrarian: Um, do you have strawberry?

I've a feeling I'm one of these - what about you? Sam Bowman says we need more contrarians to challenge conventional wisdom and keep an open mind.
1. Be a Devil's advocate, challenge what is said.
2. Assume some people are wrong.
3. Don’t worry about annoying a few people when you doubt them.
4. When you find a Sacred Cow, you are really onto something.

(Hear more on the link above and see if you are a contrarian or even might like to be one!)

  1. Like your research on plastics - I still use it but it's horrible stuff for wildlife!
