SERIOUSLY, MORE PLASTIC THAN FISH IN OUR OCEANS?!

At first glance it looks like people on a lovely beach! But..... look again....... it's that plastic problem.
By 2050 the report says there will be more plastic in the sea than fish. However, I like to find good news stories that run alongside the bad.

Terry, Christina, and Chris, 3 friends who read about the plastic problem and the Great Pacific garbage patch -- a vast semi-dissolved island of waste twice the size of France, invented the SeaVax, a solar-powered ship that can suck up to 22 million kgs of plastic a year! Just a small number of these ships could clean up the entire Pacific garbage patch in just 10 years!!

For just the price of a meal or a cup of coffee, we can help - they need funding!!!!! (Dragon's Den would be a good place) but in the meantime there's you and me!

One important thing the Ecowatch article says is this regarding marine life:

"For what it’s worth, Bluebird Marine Systems said their finished SeaVax will feature automatic shutdown in case marine life is detected, as well as an SOS beacon to alert rescue workers of any marine life-threatening situations"

and this is worth a lot don't you think?

Tidal Lagoon Power

Here's another story - a 'good news' one - to do with the sea!

Harness the power of Swansea Bay

What is a tidal lagoon, and how does it work?

A tidal lagoon is a man-made breakwater wall in the sea that generates power from the motion of the tides. The tallest/deepest part of the wall houses a number of hydro-turbines , which generate electricity when water flows past the turbine blades.

The flow of water past the blades is managed by sluice gates. When the flood tide starts to come in, the sluice gates are closed and the sea outside the wall is held back and rises around the lagoon. This creates a difference in water levels on either side of the seawall, which is known as ‘head’. Once a sufficient head height is reached the sluice gates are opened and water flows through turbines into the lagoon to generate electricity.

Met this lovely man James Wong - not only does he tell you how to grow better plants but how to eat better too. James is an Ethnobotanist – in simple terms he is a scientist who studies how people use plants, so he knows how we should eat them!!

His first prime time show Grow Your Own Drugs aired on BBC2 in 2008. In the 6 part series James cooked up homemade herbal remedies, offering an alternative to over the counter medicines for a variety of common ailments as well as some great beauty fixes to make you feel fabulous. James has 2 bestselling books Grow Your Own Drugs and A Year with James Wong. I shall certainly be following him.

I also went to a demonstation by Henrietta Inman - introducing her book 'Clean Cakes' - just up my street - gluten free, dairy free and sugar free. Got the book - got to do it now!!!

What is a ‘clean’ cake?
One made with natural, unrefined, pure and wholefood ingredients.

Are clean cakes actually good for us? (she says)
It’s still cake, no question; still a treat containing sugar and sweeteners, but I think it’s a healthier way of enjoying your favourite things. My cakes are packed with fibre, good fats, protein and low-GI unrefined sweeteners. They provide sustained energy, keep you fuller for longer, help avoid bloating and slumps and, most importantly, they taste great.

I also bought a Spiraliser -

(Oh gosh! I need a book for that too!)

AT our Cookery Club we had demos of one of these and a Nutribullet - great but I always want the equipment (and the book!)

We'll be so healthy - growing it, spiralising it and putting it in the cakes!

How about:

'Courgette, basil, lime and pistachio cake with avocado lime cream and raspberry jam'

It's Easter! Great to have the Easter eggs and time off work but don't let's forget Jesus!
